You leave before they can. You have called it instinct. It was fear wearing the face of strength.
You leave before they can. You feel it the moment closeness crosses a certain line, a cooling, a pull backward, a sudden clarity about everything wrong with them, arriving precisely when things were finally starting to be right. You have ended good things and called it instinct. You have gone quiet on people who were just beginning to truly see you, and felt a relief you did not look at too closely, and underneath it, a grief you never let yourself feel.
The leaving feels like strength. It feels like knowing your own worth. Underneath it is the oldest math you run, that if you go first, it will not destroy you when they go. And you are certain they will go, because somewhere deep you decided that closeness ends in loss, and that loss, at that depth, once felt like dying.
So you keep the exit in view. You stay a little unreachable. You shrink the whole thing down to something you could survive losing, which means you never let it become something worth keeping.
| What they see | What you carry |
|---|---|
| So independent | Always one foot out the door |
| Needs no one | Leaving before anyone can leave first |
| A free spirit | Certain that closeness ends in loss |
| Knows when to walk away | Walking away from what was finally good |
| Unshakeable | Quietly grieving what you ended |
This was never strength. It is a shape you took, long ago, so the leaving could never be done to you.
You will keep leaving first until you stop believing that staying is the same as being destroyed.
There is something in you that has never had to run. It was never in danger from closeness, never at risk of being lost inside another person, because it cannot be left. It has been watching you leave, over and over, from a place nothing ever touched.
That is the way out. Not another exit, and not staying trapped. The older traditions have a name for it, and a way of returning to it.
